The Eastern Free State is looking wonderful, green and lush. However, dig down and it is dry dry dry. We get the build up and can see the rain falling on our neighbours farm, they get 30mm and we get nothing! As I write this I am aware that there are only 3 weeks to Christmas and before we blink it will be 2012.
Last night we had our first good rain, 30mm of welcome relief - the grass and gardens were beginning to gasp. We are having a harvest thanksgiving service in our church this weekend – and are excited about our fruit crop! 130 bottles of apricot jam – from one tree! and still going…..
I read recently that Goose used to be the bird of choice at Christmas before Turkey became popular, not surprising consider the way ours multiply. Anyone who would like a goose, please just let us know, they make excellent watch ‘dogs’ (gooses doesn’t sound quite right). We are also pleased to announce that we have four ducklings this year - all doing well. We have two new angora rabbits – no names (officially) but each child that visits ‘names’ them, so they have more names than the king of England, we just don’t know what they are! They are well settled and obviously happy in their new bunny bungalows as we have had a dozen healthy babies in the last two months. (Anyone thinking ahead to Easter….)
Talking about thinking ahead, we have an exciting calendar for next year. Starting with a (limited edition) art weekend on the 20 – 22nd January 2012. Local artist Nadja Steil will be running a ‘ten guests only’ art class. Many good artists abound in this area but, her equestrian pictures are some of the most beautiful. So dust off your paint brush or just come along and learn something new. If there is no artist in you – surprise someone who would like this experience!
We also have exciting Stargazing weekends with Joyce and Robert Faltermeier planned and a not to be missed ‘Walking with Wild flowers’ weekend with Dr Ashley Nicholas in November. Many trips are planned for those who do not want to negotiate the roads themselves. We will have the full programme on our ‘soon to be uploaded’ new website so keep looking…
Father Christmas has been notified that there are children at Wyndford and the chimney has been cleaned….wonder if he will use it or come by tractor this year? Decorations are organized, menus are planned and everyone is ready to give you a warm Wyndford welcome this festive season. (Feeling frazzled and not yet made plans – give the girls in the office a call to see if we can fit you in sometime!)
George and I have just completed a 3000km road trip round South Africa and encountered some of our best and worst roads! We share with you a sign seen in the Karoo - when I once again yelled ‘stop, picture…’ - and wish you safe travels and happy holidays.
From us all at Wyndford

Fun Bowling Week 23 November - 2 December 2011

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BPYUjhR7mi8/TreizVyroGI/AAAAAAAAAGI/zWo-4uOObH0/s320/Bowl%2Bballs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5672181258603176034" />

Road to the farm from Natal

Just a quick update for those of you driving up from Durban and surrounds. There is a detour at Phuthaditjhaba. This is due to a wash away a while back. The detour signs are small and we recently had someone get a little lost. Once you have turned left at the detour sign, stay on this road (it is brick paving for a large part of the way). The first robot you come to turn right and stay on this road until you are out of town and come to the 712 to Clarens where you will turn left onto a loop and then right at the stop sign. Hope this helps - travel safe.

October news

Anybody else out there, who turns the magnifying mirror over to get the bigger picture, only to discover that you are already on the bigger picture? Who writes down September only to discover that we are in October and that there are only 8 weeks to Christmas and in nine weeks we will be in 2012…gasp!

As I write this we are experiencing 32° temperatures and no sign of any rain on the horizon. After a beautiful Spring, things are looking a little crispy round the edges. The roses have been spectacular, probably the best we have seen in four years. The Wisteria was magnificent with - stopped counting at 24 - bumble bees flitting all over, great for all doing close up photography!

We had a group of energetic senior cyclists recently who did a tour on all the back roads from Ficksburg to Clarens, Golden Gate and return back to ficksburg, 350 km in 5 days. They have previously done the ‘follow’ the Tour de France route and reckoned that this trip was just as spectacular! Yay for the Eastern Free State! And well done to all of the cyclists…

We have once again heard, and seen, the Piet-my-vrou. Shane was hard pressed to select four of his pictures (out of the hundreds taken!) of the many other birds that live and sing – such a calming cacophony of sound, ok well, maybe exclude the Hadeda in the calming bit! - at Wyndford.

Hamilton, Schummie and Button, our pot-bellied pigs are a little lonely since we moved all the chickens and rabbits to a new home, where the layers used to be. Not sure if you remember the picture of Peter Rabbit by Beetrix Potter, squeeeeeezing under the fence, to get to the veggie garden…we discovered a 3cm gap in the fence allowed the bunnies access to heaven….rows upon rows of lettuce and strawberries, fortunately full bunnies are slow bunnies and the lettuce (mostly) survived.

We have put together some exciting weekends for next year, Stargazing, Art, Glass and Mozaic and have a Bowls week coming up from 28 November to 2 December 2011. Call Angelique or Pat on 058-2230274 or drop us an email to reception@wyndford.co.za to find out more. Also on the cards for next year are two pick up tours for seniors (that sounds a bit like dating for the oldies- not what I meant) If being collected by bus, two day trips and a week at Wyndford and safely returned home sounds good, we can give you all the information.
Our winner this month is Jamie Phillips. Congratulations!
Warm regards from us all at Wyndford.

All back up on the telephone front

All telephone connections have been restored, thanks to a very helpful and energetic Telkom man, who got stuck in with a spade and sorted the problem out...only to get locked in the field by the local farmer.... duly rescued by George. Unfortunately, while we were away the cows all went walkabout, all night… and merrily munched their way through the garden. Everything from the Lodges to the Ark was well and truly chewed. They even nibbled their way along outside Belsteen before they were discovered. If it wasn’t bad enough that everything was winter brown it is all now only a few inches high. And here I was worried about the buck!
I have always had trouble remembering the name Helibores so in my head called them Hallelujah plants, they must be sour as they did not get recycled into cream, and hallelujah they are still intact!

Roll on Spring and new growth…. While we are on this subject, a note that The Fouriesburg Spring Fair takes place on the 3rd September 2011. Take a look at website www.fouriesburginfo.co.za to keep up to date with what is on offer and start planning a weekend break at Wyndford! Our August winner will be decided by the OFM promotion of the fair, so be sure to listen in if you are in the area.

Maybe it is a touch early to think of spring as this photo shows! I switched to garden hose on and forgot to switch it off, and we had a minus 6 morning. I am currently sitting with a broken ankle due to a slide off the running board of the Toyota bakkie (no, I did not have high heels on at the time!)…but the rest of the team is wondering if the head got bumped when the heel got broke!

We enjoyed having the St Martin’s school maths camp here for 5 days, a highlight of which was the challenge to a game of Bowls. Our laundry ladies made a good cheer leading section but the end result was a draw. Roll on next year! Our bowling Green is now closed until the end of September for it’s annual makeover.

Best wishes to all our students who are facing exams of one kind or another in the next little while – there are advantages to getting older!

We wish you all a spectacular Spring - it is certainly beautiful here!Greetings from us all at Wyndford.

Very Slow....

Photos will be uploaded when I make it down to the office..... Working from home as after a short break away in the Kruger Park, where we had THE most wonderful sightings,(although one has to keep reminding oneself that these are Wild animals and not farmyard ones) - especially not a good idea to stroke the lion as it bumps against the car door! I digress, working from home as the day after our return, heading out to see the snow I slipped off the Toyota running board and broke my ankle in three places. I seems to take forever to do things with only one good foot and hands occupied on crutches.

August newsletter will be going out soon so keep watching this space...

Happy day!

July Holidays

July 2011We had a great bunch of guests in over the July holidays. Lots of walking was done, abseiling, horse riding, bunny feeding, and of course eating. We discovered that some of you are not up to minus temperatures - must be all those from the warm Natal areas! The cold does mean that everyone who ventured into Lesotho to the ski slopes had wonderful fun playing in the snow and we have some impressive ice waterfall pictures. Some good skiing was also enjoyed and congratulations to 10 year old John who managed the whole run.
It would appear that Spring has sprung early in our farmyard. We have seven new pink (yes, real proper pink – Celvin’s photo to prove it…) pigs. They arrived on the coldest morning of winter yet, and are doing splendidly, in fact so well that three of them came walkabout past the dining room one lunch time. Oops.

We also had a new calf arrive so it has already been a bumper baby season. The rest of the farm seems to have settled into winter brownness. That in itself comes with a whole different spectacle as far as the garden is concerned. The pines have shed their cones which leaves the driveway full of winter ‘roses’ and colorful seedpods abound. Our resident buck has been very visible lately – ambling down the driveway mid-morning and still unfortunately with a preference for spring bulbs, sweet peas and roses. We had to remove the big tree (the one lilting dangerously) at the end of the bowling green and have decided to plant a new Oak in its place. It has been surprisingly difficult to find a decent Oak in the Free State….?!

We have encountered the same slowdown in economy as has been felt around South Africa and indeed the world - the quiet Eastern Free State has definitely been just that. Talking of good oaks, Celvin along with Angelique and the now one-year-old, Cassidy are off on leave shortly. Shane and Patricia after three years eventually sorted out their passports and were able to take their miniature 4x4 into Lesotho! Our monthly draw winner this month is Marc Paravano.

E, M and U as well as Schumie, Button and Hamilton send greetings!....Oh ok, Ponty too..(that horse always did have attitude). Until next time, take care and plan a spring break soon! The road past Sterkfontein Dam is, well awful actually, but only for about 20 minutes and as van Reenen's pass was closed with broken down trucks in both directions it was still the best route. The slow ride through the stop/go areas on most roads at least gives the passengers a chance to take a look around and enjoy the scenery. Shake off the frustration - I challenge all travelers to take a photo of something you hadn't noticed before at each stop....

Anyone coming to the Eastern Free State from Natal, please bring WARM clothes! Yes really, over the past weeks they have grown furry white feathers down to their knees that look like cosy long johns. Sorted!

Not so fortunate, are our three new pot belly pigs, but they have worked out a running track round the farm yard that rivals Formula 1. Three times round one way and then abrupt turnabout and three times the other way would keep anyone warm. There are the odd sqwarks when a chicken gets in the way and the bunnies dive down the nearest hole. Maybe we should call them Button, Schumie and Hamilton (hammy?!)…

This Autumn was spectacular for photography – the colours have been amazing and stayed for a long time. I think that the Liquid Ambers at the Church were the best I have ever seen them. In part due to the high rainfall over the last few months and especially this week, very late for us, which has some wonderful spinoffs. We have had interesting displays of mushrooms over the last few months, some very poisonous but beautiful red with white spots that look like they should have fairies perched on top. (Watching the antics of some guests photograph them one could be sure they had seen a fairy!)

Walking is an unusually slippery pastime at the moment due the fact that we have streams where there were never streams before. Cycling down to the river road the trickle that comes down from the Big Drip (which was completely frozen last week) is still running so strongly that it can be heard before it is seen.
The log pile is full as we anticipate some snow in the next little while. We have already seen a dusting on the Maluti Mountains but never fear, the rooms are heated and cosy and the food hearty and warming!
I have been trying to convince the boys that if we dig a large square area and fill it will water, top it up every night (we’ll delegate this responsibility to Shane I think) …we could have… a skating rink! Good idea? I need some support here guys! I thought this would be a great use of our natural resources (minus 5 Degree temperatures).
George will probably be doing a trip to the chain ladder at Mount aux Source during the week of the 4 – 10 July which is a full day walk. Very special, and something to think of if you are planning to join us in the July holidays. Remember that over these holidays our usual out-of-season special of 20% discount for four nights or longer applies.
Our monthly draw winner this month is Debbie Buck. We have had our main computer upgraded, with all the usual hiccups… and remote control corrections (a very weird feeling to watch the mouse move of its own accord on your screen). I used the down time to redo all the old photo albums in the lounge. It was an interesting exercise and just inspires looking for more information on the history of Wyndford. We recently received a brochure from 1967 from a guest who now resides in Holland. The rate per person per night was R2.75 with an en suite bathroom 50 cents extra. A deposit of 50 cents was required. (Sorry we can’t beat that but see our last minute special below!) Donkeys and lambs were also around in those days apparently, and although not presently seen at Wyndford, I can report that Eee, Em and You (our resident Emu’s for those who have not met them yet) are well settled in their new paddock and have learnt very quickly to identify the sound of Lucas walking down the road with their bucket of food. It would appear that Autumn is whistling in on the wind. The leaves are starting to turn and fall (messy but fun!) and there is a distinct cooling of an evening. Although we had 16mm rain last night there is still not sufficient in the Caledon to go tubing at present, but the slightly cooler temperatures makes walking and cycling pleasant (is cycling ever pleasant… please tell me it gets easier!) The cosmos is also spectacular this year with whole fields rippling in pink and white. One good reason to let Dozer, Shane, George or Celvin lead the walk from the front is the large number of Golden Orb Spiders with their amazing webbing skills! For all those who have missed the turnoff to Caledonspoort and Wyndford in the past, you will be pleased to know that after 7 years of waiting, as of this week we now have new signage at and around the crossroads. Unfortunately, one or two were put directly behind the old ones. As for other traveling information, we can confirm that there are potholes and road works on all approaches to Wyndford at present!

I leave you with this delightful picture taken recently of two little chaps on the dining room steps putting the world right, with the ever present and patient Dozer lending an ear. Our monthly draw winner this month is Eleanor Smith. We look forward to hearing from you soon and hopefully making use of our last minute special. Greetings from us all at Wyndford.

Quick note about the coming long weekend

We had wonderful thunder storms last night and some good rains this morning. (‘and’ has vanished altogether, and so unfortunately, there are now only three birds) We have a new sport called Emu round up which is a great cardio vascular workout definitely not for the faint of heart!

Sticking with the feathered news – a new species has been sighted at Wyndford, now called the ‘Bearded Sparrow”. This little bird can be seen working furiously fetching and carrying, impersonating Santa, whenever Dodge, our Husky has been brushed! Needless to say, all newborns at Wyndford have very warm cosy nests…..

For all those little boys (and girls and Moms) that have been ‘snake hunting’ with Shane, this picture above is for you! A 60cm Puff Adder found in our garden…this time I was quicker on the uptake and went to fetch Shane and left George to watch the snake!

We have started work on repairing the swing bridges on the Little Caledon. It has been amazing to see the force of the water which pulled and bent chemical bolts out of the rock, but we have managed to salvage the cable and wooden slats so progress is being made (albeit a little slow due to the precarious nature of the bridge…and with only one dunking so far - fortunately not George – I have it on good authority that he doesn’t float so well…….!).

After two years of disappointing fruit crops due to late frosts, we have now had the most wonderful season. We are still waiting for the grapes, quinces and pears to ripen, but have had great jam making sessions already. You can be assured, that all jams served at Wyndford are home grown and made and the pantry is full. Wow! Having said that, there are only so many things you can do with apples, apples and apples. They are fairly dripping off the trees, so we (thanks to Josh, our son, who has just spent three weeks at home) are now into cider making. We have a special press– plus a fair amount of male energy - for extracting the juice …. And now have 150litres of gurgling ‘frog’ noises in the garage! We await to see (or maybe that should be taste) the results…

We have had at least three new guests recently who commented that the driving down the driveway is like finding a little oasis. The gardens are indeed lush after all the rain and a wonderful quiet place to sit and read a good book…. or even just to pretend to read! Snoozing allowed.

It is our intention this year to work towards upgrading all the linen in the rooms. We have traditionally had each room with different patterned duvet covers, but the current trend is for white percale - but then most guest houses don’t have creepy crawly walks with mud, bunny yards for the kids, or Milo served in bed early in the morning. The jury is still out, but be assured we are continually trying to make Wyndford a greater place to be.

A reminder for the energetic among you that the Surrender Hill Marathon takes place on the weekend of the 4th – 6th March in the Fouriesburg Clarens area. (Maybe we should enter Eee, Em and You!)

On behalf of the Wyndford Family
Have a great Month ahead.

I am having difficulty uploading pictures but will keep trying and let you see some up to the minute pics of Wyndford!

And into 2011...

Welcome to 2011… not a soccer ball in sight…plenty of water though!! For all of those who spent the festive season swimming with us, today is the first day of sunshine we have had in 2011. As you can see by the picture below, we, like the rest of the country have had huge amounts of rain. In the first four days of January we had over 100mm…. One does begin to envy the ducks their webbed feet!

This didn’t dampen the spirits however! We still managed to play tennis, swim and play on the jumping castle at the pool, go for long walks in the very lush mountains. We have never had quite so many trips tubing on the river as it has been flowing strongly… a couple of nervous moments when Shane disappeared from sight to emerge through the bushes 300m downriver!!
Sadly to say the water is lapping at our swing bridges on the Little Caledon. The power of the high water has pulled the chemical bolts out of the rocks and bent all the iron stays, so the wood slats and cables are still there but hanging at a superman angle. Hopefully once the waters recede we will be able to rebuild.

We must have known the weather was going to be just so….. all the staff received red rain jackets for Christmas and we became proud parents to four young Emu’s – birds with necks that will keep their heads above water! They are very nervous at present but have made firm friends with the ducks and geese.

Duck (not ours!) and Cherry Pies were on the menu for Christmas and New years eve and a wonderful evening of everyone learning how to Dance with the Wyndford Stars! was had by all.

Father Christmas had no trouble finding our Chimney; maybe this had to do with the fact that we had to send last minute urgent letters (via email) to Santa to let him know which little people were on holiday with us. Cassidy encountered Father Christmas for the first time ever and gave him a run for his money on the fashion stakes!

A reminder for the energetic among you that the Surrender Hill Marathon takes place on the weekend of the 4th – 6th March in the Fouriesburg Clarens area.

On behalf of the Wyndford Family
We would wish you and yours a 2011 filled to overflowing with…..
Real joy and uninhibited laughter; Perfect peace and contentment,
Excitement and Special surprises; Hope for Great tomorrows, And God’s Richest blessings!

One benefit of the terrible fires over the winter, is that the Eastern Free State is now wonderfully green, combine that with the sandstone colours and it is rather spectacular. (Add a few puffy white clouds and clear blue skies and you have a photographer’s dream!) Recent guests visiting the area for the first time were amazed at how beautiful it is!

We have A Duckling…long may she last! As you probably know our ducks are not the best parents. The geese on the other hand are thriving as usual. We have three new pigs… unfortunately Pork chop and his lady are so large ne’er the twain shall meet, so no piglets forthcoming. Dandy has been having riding lessons (yes even horses have to learn!) and will soon be confident enough to take the next generation of Wyndford cowboys and girls up and down the drive.

We are still working on the additional bicycle route up the top of what used to be the Mast. George and I have recently joined the cycling conclave, right at the bottom of the pile (there could be a pun in there)…. I now understand why cycle pants are padded. I must say I prefer down hills and slight bends and do not do sharp corners! It is the only sport we can manage together and I tend to giggle all the way, presumably that will stop once the nerves are overcome!

After watching on in panic recently, while Shane enthusiastically removed a Puff Adder who had wondered in, we decided that for all of our peace of mind, it would be great for him to go on a training course. Up to Johannesburg he went, and spent the day learning about identifying, treatment and handling venomous snakes. He came back with great respect for the snake and a more cautious and educated approach. For those of you who have walked with him, yes, he does still look under all the rocks…

Information overload, could be one way to describe my month of traveling! Learning by osmosis... seeing how various establishments operate, present food, host people, make beds, market themselves...and more. My head is brimming with ideas and as well as points to be aware of. Watching people was another interesting observation, to see how people are living today and what a 'holiday' means, and then hopefully we can provide a better service. Of course there are also the simple lessons like 'do not try to apply permanent lip colour on a London tube or while driving on some South African roads...'

Talking of roads, after doing nearly 3300 kms round South Africa we can report that there are road works with holding periods all over. They are still busy with the Villiers Frankfort section from Joburg as well as the section through Golden Gate over Oliviershoek Pass road past Sterkfontein Dam. Delays also from Rouxville to Ladybrand in the Free State.

It is hard to believe that we are nearly at December. The time of year to chill out with family and friends and regroup. If you have not planned anything yet, there is still some availability – take a few days out to give Moms a ‘cooking free’ holiday, kids a ‘free range’ holiday and dads a …well there is the bicycle route, a great book from the library, lots of good food…..

Looking forward to hearing from you and seeing many of you shortly
Stay well, best regards from
The Wyndford Team
PS Since writing, we have become the proud owners of 10 strapping new quackers, who make our old ducks look like featherweights!

Travels....

Information overload, could be one way to describe my month of travelling! It is such a delight to see little cousins from other ends of the world getting to know one another and having fun. Wyndford has always been a great place for family. There is also something about a horse that is special, long before we see Maluti or Dusty come into view down the driveway we can hear the busy chatter of little voices, when even the quietest of children seem to be empowered and enthralled by the gentle sway of what would seem to them to be a very large animal. We have seen many cowboys in the making.

The Red Chested Cuckoo (or Piet-my-vrou) has been heard and seen and we are pleased to announce that we have had 8mm rain last night. Good to start slow as the walking trails are very dusty and would be washed away if we had too much in one go. We have worked on the bicycle trail and made it easier (?) to ride – not quite a double highway but apparently a good ride, difficult and technical but not extreme, according to guests.

If you are coming down to us from Joburg areas, the Villiers route is under (proper!) construction and not just sand filling the holes. There are three holding points between Villiers and Frankfort which could take you up to 30 minutes to travel. If however you are fortunate with your timing, as I was last week, you can slip through with no delays at all. This route is fine during the day but would maybe recommend the Warden Bethlehem route if you are traveling at night.

Good news to report on the water front! After four tries and 120 metres, we struck water and now have a borehole, which George reported this morning filled the tanks in one hour, We walked through the trees at the tanks and had our first sips of crystal clear wonderful Wyndford water, straight out the pipe!

Family news.. we have 10 little yellow goslings (and counting!) Angelique, Celvin and Cassidy are back from leave and Shane and Patricia are planning a special time in Durban for her birthday celebrations in November. Lindy is on her way to England to visit Josh and Kirsty and hopefully to be there when Kirsty gets her pilots license. Minei is off to Bloemfontein to pursue a career with the Foshini Group, where we wish her well but note that the staff table will be a little less raucous from now on…

It seems like the year is running away and it is nearly Christmas…Don’t leave it too late to plan for the revitalizing break after a year well done.

Travelling to Wyndford

Just a quick update....
Travelling from Joburg the Villiers /Frankfort / Reitz road is at present being fixed (at long last). There are three stages where there are holding and waiting sections which will add about half and hour onto your trip. Other than that the route seems to be OK. Farmers are busy harvesting, and we see combine harvesters (‘gander ganders’ according to my kids from the time they were tiny….) loping up and down the fields and then spitting out tons of pale yellow pips. Well, we had our first ride on a ‘gander gander’ this week with Minei as she harvested mielies on her father’s farm, what a great experience! The buck along with their partners in crime, Albert and Victoria, the peacocks are eating all the spring seedlings and bulbs. Already some of the fruit trees are budding - far too early as we haven’t begun pruning yet! Even Charlotte, the tortoise has been popping in and out of hibernation…

We already have three new calves, all Quella’s babies, very beautiful and chocolate brown in colour, duly named Cadbury, Mousse and Brownie! Shane carried Mousse up to the top paddock on her second day and discovered that she is quite a weight and although very small still packs a kick! He also graduated to a slightly larger new camera case after he was unceremoniously relocated by little Moo (who should I suppose now be called medium Moo)! (The camera survived – not sure about Shane’s ego)

We have at last managed to find the leak in the duck pond, which means they now no longer have to stand in line for a chance at ‘the’ puddle… but can actually swim once more albeit with floating ice bergs the last few mornings. The weather has been beautiful, very cold in the mornings and warm in the middle of the day, still no sign of snow, but the ski slopes have a good run going with their snow machines. (Remember to bring your passports if you are thinking of going through to Lesotho - temporary passports are not allowed)

I would not claim in any way to be a gardener but we are very excited about our discovery in the veggie garden…We have managed to keep our coriander, parsley, lettuce and a few other things going amid the severe frosts by nesting them in the hay we feed the horses. This has obviously kept them warm and protected and wonderful to still be picking fresh things from the garden. It does however come with other problems, like last week when the horses escaped and we found them munching away in the veggie patch……nothing like a midnight roundup to warm one up and ensure you sleep well at night!

We also said a warm Wyndford welcome to baby Cassidy who arrived on World Cup Final day, having slid under the radar a full two weeks earlier than expected. A tiny little dot at just under 3kg with a light dusting of brown hair who already upsets all Angelique’s precise planning and is the apple of Dad’s eye! Life has forever changed in the Woolmore residence….

Football is still a hot topic here although the World Cup has come and gone we now boast a Wyndford Team…I spent an hour and a half waiting for kick off yesterday (definitely on African time….) or maybe things were just delayed due to the opposition being the team from Home Affairs!!

It is nearly time to close the bowling green for its annual makeover - (Ponty gets pedicures and the bowling green gets a makeover…I’m definitely missing a trick here) and before we know it, it will be Spring.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Until then, stay well and warm,
Best regards
the Wyndford Team

Someone left the fridge door open this morning...Temperatures have taken a dive but as yet still no snow to be seen on the Maluti Mountains. Just one more week of the World Cup and holidays, we trust all our guests have had a great time at Wyndford. Fun was had down at Ibis Gorge as the tractor took everyone down to go agate hunting in the river and a group are just back from abseiling. Remember our post world cup special running for the weekend of the 16th - 18th July 2010 where all adults get a 30% discount. Trees are standing bare and quiet and the fence poles are topped with frost each morning. (Dodge has been seen lying early morning covered in a layer of frost making ‘snow angels’ – heaven on earth for a Husky!) It is also fun to see how a few flurries of snow around the farm can bring people out from warm firesides twirling with glee (whatever their age)! These pictures show how different and special each season at Wyndford is.…

Fire is always a worry at this time of year, especially when due to the good rains in summer the grass is standing near as tall as me. Last week we were alerted to a crackling red rim all round us as the top of the mountain burned brightly. Fortunately there was not a breath of wind and although the blackened ground is not great, the threat to Wyndford has now considerably lessened.

I am pleased to say that I am not the only one surprised by Pork Chop… I don’t feel quite so much like a city girl anymore. So here we introduce him, (the Big one) next to a horse which gives you some idea of his size, having said that, he still needs to be seen to be believed!

We had a very festive braai with everybody in the Shed for the Bafana match, unfortunately all our shouting didn’t seem to make a difference! On a quiet day recently, we decided to show our staff that there are other games besides football, and we played foozeball, table tennis and snooker and then took them all outside and taught them how to play bowls. With much hilarity and competition, but with very little expertise, we decided this sport only takes one roll to make people lean either to the left or to the right!

Our winner of a two night mid week stay for two is Val Chilcott. We look forward to being able to welcome you to Wyndford.

♫ Music to your ears (and wallets)…….
We are offering a special discount of 30% for all adults (you don’t have to be a golden oldie to qualify for this one) for the weekend of 16 – 18 July. This would require a two night stay. So, round up friends and family and take a much needed ‘post match’ break – but be sure to call soon to avoid disappointment. ♫

Waiting to hear from you
Until then, stay well and warm,
Best regards from the Wyndford Team

Reminder for those visiting Wyndford in the winter holidays...

Remember to bring your passports with if you are planning to go into Lesotho, especially if it snows any time soon.....

The Eastern Free State is showing its colours and temperatures! Definitely going down…..having said a fond farewell to all sandals for the year we are definitely into boots weather.

Pork chop arrived this week to inspect his new abode. A little daunting to see a 350kg pig start to eat his way into the bark of the nearest tree in the paddock. It took three men behind him to ‘persuade’ him in the right direction, but he has since taken to more pigly pastimes and is now just wallowing in his pen. He is more wirey and hairy than expected – ok, so there is still some city girl in me – I thought all pigs were pink and soft.

Our Peacocks are well settled in and amble around the farm together. Seeing they come with built in crowns we decided that they required equally regal names so Victoria and Albert they are!

The horses had a moment of madness yesterday and all decided to make a break for it. Gallop-a-trot down the drive towards the church, even the timid ones were sneaking a quick nibble on the church lawn. I promise you that horses can look guilty!

Driving down to Durban last weekend for the AA Accommodation Awards dinner there was an excitement about the possibility of winning but alas, Wyndford is a bridesmaid once again. They do have lists of winners on the website http://www.accommodationawards.co.za/ for anyone interested. I drove home singing along with Queen and Elton John ….The show must go on! (Glad there was no-one else in the car with me…) Be assured that we always try our best to ensure that your holiday, however long or short, will always be of the highest standard and hopefully a memory making occasion!

Our festive football games room is complete with new fooseball (soccer with sticks…?!) machine and all 32 flags of the world cup. I think we might offer a prize to the person who can stand in the middle of the room and tell us all 32 flags and countries……none of us are there yet! There is something about waving a flag that lifts the spirits…on the way up to the games room with our SA flag there were shouts of Bafana Bafana from all around the farm and putting up the flags was one of the most enjoyable (and noisy….everybody has an opinion on who will win!) tasks undertaken.

Seen above is a very special picture Shane took in the trees outside reception. We have repeatedly heard the African Wood Owls talking to each other at night but have not seen one. This chap spent an hour or so with us allowing his photo to be taken from each and every angle! A very exciting sighting indeed!!

To all oldies, who missed their discounts in June/ July holidays watch for a special in the near future…having said that, oldies still qualify for the 20% four nights or longer discount so round up the kids and grandkids and join us. Remember, if you are visiting us in the winter months, remember to bring your passports just in case it decides to snow up in the mountains.

I was told last time that I was getting my games muddled, red carded, sidelined…maybe I should stick to something I know and say …Book soon for June July holidays if you do not want to be caught in the deep…

Waiting for your call or email
Until then, stay well and warm,
Best regards from the Wyndford Team

Having had so much rain in the last little while, the Eastern Free State is looking particularly pretty as everything is green and lush and the leaves are painting a palette of gold as autumn arrives. The morning and evening temperatures have dropped and a jersey is definitely required (even Shane arrived so attired one morning this week!) Crisp fresh mornings but still getting up to the mid 20’s during the day with clear bright blue skies – all adds up to being great for walking and photography!

This season has been a delicious veggie garden year. We have had our own broccoli, cauliflowers, rocket, gems, and yellow tomatoes, to name a few as well as pumpkins by the score! (14 of which grew ‘by mistake’ in the church garden!) Tonight’s pudding is raspberry cheesecake with our home grown raspberries!

It would appear that the adoption of the peacock and his lady will go ahead as they have so far behaved with aplomb. After the first day of freedom to roam the garden, Lucas and Shane spent an eventful half hour directing them into the pen with the ducks and geese for the night and now if we can’t find them in the garden late afternoon they have taken themselves off home! They have inspected the reception and the games room - not their favorite place – tiled floors and claws are not very elegant to negotiate!! Any suggestion for names will be duly considered…

We have another prospective member to the family coming soon in the form of ….. Pork Chop. He is a 350kg pig belonging to a local farmer’s wife and we agreed to take him over in exchange for a bunny.. (or two) We are now busy building a pig pen at the bottom of the paddock as his new accommodation.

Talking of accommodation, we have recently renovated Outlook’s bathroom – into a shower room. With the rich additions of kelims on the floor and a few other tweaks, this room is still an old favourite. We also have a new look office with golden poplar which we are really enjoying.. although after the first week we had skid marks on the counter from where Wyndford (the cat) lands after jumping off the cupboard. Pictured above negotiating the top of the tennis court fence – heights are not an issue!

Our winner of a two night mid week stay for two is Suzanne Maritz. We look forward to being able to welcome you to Wyndford.

Soccer fever passes us by a little here in the country, but with so few days left to the World Cup kick off and the wonderful school holidays, we still have some availability over June and July. Eskom and DSTV withstanding we should be able to enjoy all the excitement from afar! Don’t leave it too late if you do not want to be side lined (or is that rugby?!)!

Waiting for your call or email
Until then, stay well,
Best regards from the Wyndford Team

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5456612120022564930" style="DISPLAY: block; Safe and happy traveling!

Looking out the window from the ‘Hub’ as I write this - the office is being given a facelift – (come to think of it, the office gets a facelift and Ponte gets regular pedicures…..I must be doing something wrong!). Anyway back to gazing out the window….it is a misty overcast day with the purple Maluti mountains in the background. George is off on the ‘twin bridges’ walk (yes, great news but rather miffed as he was informed that only long trousers from now on – no more shorts!).

We sadly have to report that Mr Squirrel has obviously decided to move on to greener (or higher) pastures as he is no longer in residence at the bottom of the road. We have acquired a peacock and peahen pair, who have spent the last few weeks becoming acquainted with all the other feathered residents who were not impressed with the new arrivals – you don’t want to know how much noise 90 chickens 10 ducks and 15 geese can make!!! We are hoping the geese and ducks will teach them where they are and are not allowed to go – otherwise the adoption will not be finalized!

Buttercup had her first baby on Wednesday – much to everyone’s surprise! We knew she was pregnant but not that it was due quite yet. We had to go up and fetch ‘Junior’ from the bicycle trail and mother and son are doing well.

Along with the hurrying year, one realizes that summer is drawing to a close. Some of the poplar trees are already turning. The roses along the bowling green have at last decided to flower (after two years of abstinence?!) and we are still waiting for the figs…….

Once again a reminder that Wyndford rates will not be inflated over the World Cup, the only difference is that the Senior Discount does not apply over this period but the 20% discount for a four night stay or longer still applies – bookings are rolling in so don’t leave it too late if you do not want to be ‘red carded’.

Waiting for your call or email
Until then, stay well,
Best regards from the Wyndford Team

Direction suggestion...

Have twice travelled the road to Joburg and back in the last week via Reitz, Frankfort and Villiers it is our suggestion that the road via Warden is a better option at present.

The potholes on the section from Villiers to Frankfort have claimed many tyres and we would only recommend should you wish to put your 4 x 4 to the test....

for all others, from Joburg continue on the N3 to Warden and then onto Bethlehem.
Happy travelling

January News

If you thought you were weary at the end of last year you were not alone…. We were beginning to think Father Christmas had forgotten us, but after a long search we discovered him asleep on the couch in the lounge! Fortunately all his gifts were safe and duly distributed to very happy children and relieved parents.

December saw us with wonderful hot weather, if very little rain, perfect for outdoor activities and fun. We did a couple of bicycle, walking, horse riding and tractor outings to Agate Bank and Ibis Gorge and congratulations go to the four year old twins who push cycled all the way there!

New Year was brought in on a high note and a few off notes but with a lot of laughs and good cheer. I think that the jury is out on whether Wyndford’s Got Talent, but don’t think any of us will be receiving a call from Simon Cowell anytime soon.

Last Saturday saw the river full enough to once again go tubing – actually it was just two brave guests and most of the Wyndford staff! A muddy good time was had by all. We have since then had wonderful rains of 28mm on a number of occasions, and the grass, trees and flowers all breathed a collective sigh of relief. As did the veggie garden, which is now (that most everyone has departed) produced the most wonderful gems, cucumbers, baby marrows, yellow tomatoes, pumpkins, carrots, beetroot and two very ‘watched’ watermelons are on the way.

Talking about things on the way – Celvin and Angelique’s twinkle in their eye is now three months on as a twinkle in the tum! Not just the bunnies and ducks busy around here….

For those of you here at New year, George is making good progress after the clot in his leg (didn’t really think those magnificent legs could actually get bigger than they are) and we are just grateful he is still here. It was a great lesson in patience for him to be immobilized while we had a full house and hats off to all our staff who proved that the Wyndford Team works well.

We also have spotted a new resident at the junction of the driveway with the road to the car port…a small ground squirrel has made the gutter his home, much to the fascination of our husky, Dodge!

Wyndford rates will not be inflated over the World Cup, the only difference is that the Senior Discount does not apply over this period but the 20% discount for a four night stay or longer still applies – bookings are rolling in so don’t leave it too late if you do not want to be disappointed.
Until then, stay well, and we wish you a winning year
Best regards from the Wyndford Team

Well, here we are nearly to Christmas and the end of 2009.

Our November newsletter got sidelined with the general rush, Cherry festival and jam making. Unfortunately, not with our own fruit which was blown away by an icey wind in September although hopefully we will have some figs soon…

We have two new calves, Ace (yes she is completely black but we couldn’t call her Blackjack…) and Pearl, so named by Hamish, as he was up every morning at 6 waiting for her to arrive, and because of her white drop marking on her forehead.

After the scatty season with the quackers, we had three mothers sitting on eggs but have unfortunately only managed to get two to the teenager stage. Unlike the geese and hens, they are the most dreadful moms.

The ‘Piet-my-Vrou’ has been desperately yelling all morning, and how we would love some rain but unlike a few weeks ago when the garden looked amazingly lush, it is very dry and a little crisp around the edges. We did the bicycle trail and back along the river road this morning and had many gasping guests heading straight for the pool after tea. This afternoon the twin bridges walk is planned and hopefully a little cooler in the shade.

The river is so low at present that it seems impossible that a few short weeks ago we were able to take guests tubing, in a rather muddy Caledon River.

After our annual assessment by the AA we have now been awarded the title of Highly Recommended Accommodation instead of the previous Recommended Accommodation. I think that the newly revamped dining room had a lot to do with this decision!

Christmas decorations are up and everything is in place – hopefully, for a great holiday period – trusting that the weather and Eskom all behave. Father Christmas has the address, the turkey is ready (no not one of ours)and we have dusted off the midnight oil for New years when we are going to celebrate the night with “Wyndford’s Got Talent”!! Wish you were here.

There is still place available for the last few days before schools go back for all of you with little people, and for the oldies…the 30% discount will once again be available after the 12th January 2010.

Until then, stay well,
We wish you a special Christmas and a Winning 2010!
Best regards from the Wyndford Team

Yes I know it is already October but things move slowly on the farm…

While driving near Jo’burg recently and listening to the radio, it was interesting that the traffic report after the news took so long, that by the time it finished it was nearly time for the next news bulletin (yes, it was Thursday afternoon and three trucks were stuck on the van Buuren Hill – unfortunately all in different lanes!) it made me think of all our guests – past and future – living in the cities and decided that we need give you the gift of peace and quiet and space and fresh air.

This picture was taken from the top of the road to Fouriesburg and shows the fields stretching to the distant Maluti Mountains…and not a car in sight! We have had some wonderful rains over the past few days – great for us and the ducks – not such fun, we know, for moms and dads with little people on holiday!

Gratefully, Celvin and Angelique are safely back from leave as we had a few interesting moments while they were gone. A devastating fire swept through the area and George, Shane and Christine were out for about 4 hours as well as Lucas and Joseph with Dermot from Camelroc on his water truck for most of the day. I just had to contend with a Basuto man who insisted he could come through the farm as he had a passport for his cow… Quella our bull in the flower garden along with Buttercup in the veggie patch….. went to fetch Ponty down from the paddock only to realize that I wasn’t sure which way on the headband (halter – that’s the word!) went on -one or two tries later we walked home with him looking at me with a very longsuffering expression on his face ….after that I collected the eggs, all 108 of them and muttered mightily about the person who built the nesting hocks deeper than arm length….fowl poop makes cow poop look good!! Needless to say all of us slept well that night.

One of our calves arrived, and has been called ‘little Moo’
– of course there is great debate as to what she will be called when she is older…..at least our milk supply has improved. Spinach, radish, carrots, beetroots, rocket, broccoli and cauliflower (sorry kids!) are all flourishing in the veggie patch and the roses are ready to pop into full riotous colour. You just have to love spring!

We are also pleased to inform all serious bowlers (and the not so serious) that this year the bowling green is just that! Green! Looking forward to some good friendly duals in the next few months.

Wyndford had a great long weekend with special guests and even a celebratory 60th Wedding anniversary! Can anyone beat that….

October and November (remember Cherry festival time) still has availability so take the proverbial bull by the horn and call Angelique or Patricia in the office to book your pre end of year ‘refuel’ break.

Until then, stay well, Best regards from the Wyndford Team

Can you just picture this….Ducks freestyle skating! Yes it’s true, this morning the duck pond was frozen. I guess there is a reason we use goose and duck down for duvets! Fortunately the bunnies and horses have fur coats as we have had an exceptionally cold few weeks, with morning temperatures of -5 the norm. The days have been beautifully crisp and clear and walking in the mountains has been both a warming and stunning activity.

This morning is very quiet at Wyndford, most of our guests have gone up to Afri ski in Lesotho to have fun in the snow. Some brave and energetic folk played action cricket twice this week after dinner (a chilly occupation for spectators!) and four square was another warm favourite followed by hot chocolate and much laughter around the fire in the lounge.

Fire, great in the lounge, but a menace on the farm. This week saw us burning fire breaks (superbly aided by some energetic guests) on top by the Tortoise and the Slippery slide and down to the Mast. George, along with the border policeman and the local Chief had an indaba, a two hour session, seated in the cold, while some school boys confessed to starting fire after fire on our side. There were a few hot little bottoms after they were told to report to the cop station with their parents for a hiding! - no fires reported since!

Great news on the ongoing milk producing saga…we have three confirmed pregnant cows! All far enough along to be Bliksem’s offspring, so Quela will have to wait his turn. Buttercup and Daisy continue to grow in leaps and bounds and led all the guys a merry dance round (and out!) the paddock last week as they tried to dehorn them.

I’m afraid that spring is going to be blooming in the tummies of our three resident buck. They have eaten all our spring seedlings, and most other green things in the gardens - roses, violets and spring daisies being the most favourite. Pity one can’t train them to eat the weeds!

The shed is standing up straighter after a new coat of paint and a few tweaks including a fire place that works well. Our ‘new’ piano in the lounge has arrived and sounds fantastic – looks beautiful too! Thanks to Bruce and his assistance in getting it sorted out! – and to anyone who would like to join us for two evenings of gentle piano playing by Bruce, book for the weekend of the 31st August!

Great news for all bird enthusiasts! The Black Storks have come back to roost in Ibis Gorge. The same nests are being used as last year, along the ledge from the Bald Ibis (it would seem that they are happy to sub let their gorge) and it is wonderful to see them each afternoon gliding home, to what has to be one of the most beautiful spots on the whole farm.

The long weekend in August is fully book at present but there is plenty of availability on other weekends!
Hoping to hear from you soon
In the meantime, stay well and warm
Best regards from us all at Wyndford

PS Sarah, Zazoo the horse told me to say hello and sends you her love!

Hello again from a beautiful brown and frosty winter Wyndford!

Last Monday we woke early (well, some of us did) to a warm morning but by 9am it had turned bitterly cold…with the result our first sighting of snow on the Maluti Mountains. Guests driving up to us from Natal encountered thick snow on van Reenens pass. Sadly it did not stay, however the mountains have been so beautiful in true winter fashion of pink and purple hues in clear blue skies.

We are pleased to report that we now have new family member. We were joined by Quela the Jersey Bull. After three weeks, we were a little worried that he was not living up to his name - Quela means to climb up – but Lucas happily informed us this week that he did work! Fresh Wyndford farm milk and cream seems set to continue. Who ever said country living was genteel…

Wyndford the cat continues to thrive and get up to mischief. Upsetting water all over the telephone systems main computer was his highlight last week – burning smells and dead phones didn’t bode well…..Forty minutes of delicate ‘hair drying’ by Lindy and Angelique under the desk switching it back on with bated breath. All fixed – just a pity about George’s additional grey hairs! Who ever said country living was dull…

We were going to add a picture of our new look dining room to this newsletter but on seconds thoughts decided to let you come and see for yourselves! Dorchester’s new bathroom is operational and approved by guests who have just spent a week with us. Instead we will show you the garden bedecked with Porsches as the car club joined us from Gauteng for the weekend! A garage full of them and Shane’s new camera out of action! – the boys did however get a ride down the ‘S’ bends at speeds we won’t mention in case their mother’s read this newsletter.

Cool crisp FRESH air, fantastic food, peace and quiet, stunning mountain views, great walks, and cozy fireside chats. Time and space to relax and recharge. Plus a four nights or longer stay gets a 20% discount during July. What are you waiting for………!
Hoping to hear from you soon
In the meantime, stay well and warm
Best regards from us all at Wyndford

May update

Greetings once again from a chilly Wyndford!

The most wonderful scenes here yesterday with dark rain clouds and a beautiful full double rainbow over Wyndford. Unfortunately the pot of gold did not land on us – we were once again bridesmaids and not the bride at the AA Awards ceremony in Durban yesterday!

We have therefore had our four weddings and a funeral… Bliksem, our bull up and died suddenly as did one of our cows, so maybe next time …. Be assured that we always strive to give our best service and most memorable holidays whatever the awards might say!

Once again Wyndford guests are stretching boundaries! Yesterday a new minimum age for abseiling went to six year old Stacey Robinson who went down with panache observed by her proud family. This morning, Shane along with two guests did the return from Ibis gorge in 18 minutes…beating the horses on the same trail!

We have recently had special moments watching family groups celebrating landmark birthdays – maybe we should have a new record for the oldest… It is always good to see families spending time having fun and reconnecting without the stresses of everyday life.

For those of you following the upgrade progress, the curtain fabric for the dining room has at long last arrived and maybe by the end of May we will have our new look! Dorchester fans will be happy to know that as of yesterday the old bathroom no longer exists, and that next time you come, you will be able to enjoy a shower in this wonderful old rondavel!

We look forward to being able to give you a warm Wyndford welcome, hearty food and great time round the fire, remembering that at Wyndford there are no strangers, only friends you haven’t met yet!

Hoping to hear from you soon
Have a great day
Best regards from us all at Wyndford

April News

Greetings from a chilly Wyndford!

Yes, our temperatures have taken a dive and the last two weeks we have had 5 degree mornings and cooler evenings. Beautiful sunny days are the norm and the countryside is in full Autumn uniform. Tall Poplar trees are all stunningly yellow and our Liquid Amber trees are in all shades of yellow, oranges, brilliant reds to dark burgundy – a great show alongside the church.

We had our first baby dedicated at the church last week, which was very special as mom and her family had been coming to Wyndford for many years and she was married here last year. Great to meet the next generation of Wyndford children…needless to say there was also a queue of baby sitters in the kitchen!

We are desperately trying to squeeze a few more growing weeks out of the vegetable garden before the ground becomes frozen hard. The horses are all looking fat and furry with their winter coats on. Unfortunately, Dozer having developed some spectacular dreadlocks due to the burrs and grasses which were impossible to get clear with a brush, had to be shaved to clear them all off. He was very unimpressed with us but is looking better.

We are once again Finalists in the AA Awards program and Celvin and Angelique are going down to the ceremony in Durban as Wyndford representatives on the 10th May 2009. We have been finalists for the last few years and yet to be winners so hold thumbs with us!

Shane and Patricia are off on leave shortly, which means the new industry at Wyndford – stick making - will come to a halt for a while. Lindy and George are trying to find a gap to visit Kirsty and Josh in London at some stage – the good news is that you are all keeping us busy! We do appreciate your support.

We have a new ginger puss (looks like a junior Garfield!) with white socks and a great engine…called ‘Wyndford’. He was an SPCA cat which we couldn’t leave behind….. so now he lives in our staff lounge or office and is very spoilt. (He can also clear a room very quickly when he uses his turbo boost!)

Remember that the June July holiday period is not in season, so the discounts do apply. Get your bookings in soon to ensure that you will not be disappointed. Our draw winner this month is Dianne Kilan. We look forward to being able to give you a warm Wyndford welcome, hearty food and great time round the fire, remembering that at Wyndford there are no strangers, only friends you haven’t met yet!

Hoping to hear from you soon
Have a great day
Best regards from us all at Wyndford

Earth Hour: Vote Earth - The ilolated showers mean that sometimes we get all the rumbles of the thunder and it rains up the road and not on the farm....very fraustrating. The lush foliage and stormy weather means that the lighting on the sandstone cliffs is spectacular for photography.

All our animals are doing well, even our late 'lammetjie' duckling which appeared from nowhere?! Maluti has been up to his usual tricks and needed about 30 stitches last week but is doing well.

The trees are begining to turn already and it would seem that we are in for a long cold winter - not a problem with underfloor heating and open fire places to enjoy. We still have availability for the April holidays so don't miss out on the opportunity to abseil, zip line or play in the three tree houses, as well as all the usual things Wyndford has to offer! Great food, peace and quiet....
